Swiss Suited Playing Cards

Jass Cards from Various Swiss Manufacturers

This page shows Swiss Jass cards that were made by various other manufacturers. I do not believe that this page is complete and there are certainly more variations of cards I am not aware of.

WASCO - Walter Scharff Co.

Size: 87 x 55 mm - Year: early 1930 (?)

This deck of cards made by Walter Scharff (Wasco) must be one of the first Swiss suited double faced that ever was printed. On the ace of shield we can read "Spielkartenfarbrik". Since there is no profound literature about Swiss tax stamps, the tax stamp on the ace of acorn just lets us know that these cards are old. It is written "CANTON ST GALLEN KARTENSPIEL-STEMPEL 10 Cts". First the tax stamp has the obsolete spelling for canton (with a "C"). Next the tax is only 10 cents. Tax stamps of the (late) 1930s have the word canton written with a "K" (KANTON, like nowadays), the tax is 30 and written as "Rp." (Rappen) and no longer "Cts" (centimes).

E. & K. Scheuch

Size: 86 x 55 mm - Year: ?

These playing cards seem to be quite old. I have no information about this manufacturer, except what is written on the ace of bell: "E. & K. Scheuch, Zürich 2". The quality of neither the design nor the printing is high. The cards have a rather rough drawing. This deck consists of only 24 cards (4 x 9, Banner, Under, Ober, König, Ace) and were especially printed for the Jass variation "Pandur". On the original wrapper you can read: "Prima, Pandur, Jasskarten".

Size: 85 x 55 mm - Year: ?

These cards must be from the same manufacturer. The only differences I discovered are the ace of bell (without manufacturer information) and the dimension (one millimetre less high).

Bernina, Dauer-Jasskarten

Size: 87 x 55 mm - Year: 1939-1946

The manufacturer of these cards is Otto Hauser-Steiger. This company existed only during the years of World War II.

G. Rohr, Zürich 1

Format: 87 x 56 mm - Jahr: ?

I don't know anything about this manufacturer, except the name; found on the ace of shield (see detailed picture below).

Plüss-Druck AG

Size: 85 x 55 mm - Year: ?

This card maker has written his manufacturer information on a more prominent place: "Plüss-Druck AG, Zürich.

Fotorotar

Size: 92 x 59 mm - Year: 1985

Fotorotar in the small town of Egg, Canton Zürich, manufactured these cards. The brothers Lenz in Zürich, who are well known in this business, because they designed several stamps for the Swiss mail, designed them. However, the design probably refers more to the commercial on the reverse side, than to the front side that resembles very much the Müller pattern. Instead of manufacturer information on the aces of bell and shield, you can read "Schellenas" and "Schiltenas" what means as much as "ace of bell" and "ace of shield". Interesting is also the unusual large size for Swiss Jass cards.

Grolimund

Size: 89 x 58 mm - Year: ?

In this deck, all aces are mirrored. Unlike other Jass cards, the manufacturer information is solely on the Ober of Shield: "Coloroffset R. Grolimund, Bern. M. Rhyn, Laupen." The letters and digits have a sans-serif font, the banner no and the pips two indices.

Carlit

Size: 89 x 57 mm - Year: early 2000s (?)

These cards were produced after the German game maker "Ravensburger" bought the Swiss company Carlit. On the ace of shield, you can read "Carlit, © Carlit + Ravensburger AG 5436 Würenlos. The rank of court cards is written in big letters. The banners have no and the pips have 2 indices.

Size: 89 x 57 mm - Year: ?

At first sight, you could believe that the German card maker "Altenburger" made these cards, when you look at the signs in the aces of bell and shield. By looking at the other cards and the reverse side, that is the same as the previous deck, there is no doubt that these cards are also from Carlit. At second glance, you can also identify various differences to the Alteburger decks.

www.jasskarten.com

Size: 91 x 58 mm - Year: ?

The manufacturer of this deck is "Grob Druck AG" in Amriswil. All cards have large letters and digits. The banners and pips have four indices; the court cards to the rank also have additionally two suit indices.

Size: 90 x 58 mm - Year: 2005

Same manufacturer as above. Apart from the slightly smaller size, on the ace of bell you now can also read "www.jasskarten.com".

Gisler Druck

Size: 89 x 57 mm - Year: ?

The company Gisler Druck is located in Altdorf, the capital of the canton Uri. Characteristic are the extremely rounded frames and the font of the indices, which are quite small and non-bold.

Grob / Patrick Jost

Size: 89 x 57 mm - Year: 2006

The Company Grob in Amriswil gives smaller orders to be designed by Patrick Jost. The cards are printed and distrbuted by Grob. They accept orders as few as ten copies only.
The front design is some kind of vector graphics with 3-D effect.
