Swiss Suited Playing Cards

Foreign Manufacturers - Part 1: Germany

Altenburger

Most foreign manufacturers can be identified by the ace of acorn. Concentrate on the shown part that is unique for all major card makers. This one is typical for Altenburger ASS. Since some decks do not have any manufacturer information, this way of identification comes in quite handy.

Biggest difference to all other Swiss suited cards is that four of the characters on the court cards have moustaches: the Ober of Bell, Shield, Acorn and the Under of Roses. These cards come in two versions: one where the court cards have pink skin and the other with white skin.

Version with pink skin

Version with white skin

Since the two versions only differ in the skin of the courts, the aces of bell and shield are the same.

Size: 87 x 57 mm

Berliner Spielkarten

This ace of acorn is not unique. The cards by Nürnberger Spielkarten are practical identical (see further below).

The court cards of Berliner Spielkarten have soft faces. Especially the way the eyes are drawn give them a friendly look.

In this version we find the bear of Berliner Spielkarten and the company name written in big red letters on the ace of bell. The inside of the ace of shield remains blank.

Size: 89 x 57 mm

The space in the ace of shield now is used. We read: "Berliner Spielkarten". The ace of bell has more information, additionally we read: "Darmstadt und Berlin". The company logo is different than on the previous version. The bear is white in a red diamond suit symbol.

Size: 89 x 57 mm

Like Carta Mundi also Berliner has a version where you find no manufacturer information at all. In these cases you can best identify the manufacturer by the ace of acorn.

Size: 89 x 57 mm

Even though we nowhere can read the manufacturer information, these cards are clearly from Berliner. The ace of shield reads: "Plumor AG, CH-9015 St. Gallen, Tel. 071 - 32 15 65".

Size: 89 x 57 mm

At one time Berliner handed over the distribution to the Swiss company "Commitment". On the ace of bell can be read the information "Commitment Spielkarten" and on the ace of shield simply "COMMITMENT".

Size: 89 x 57 mm

Nürnberger Spielkarten

These cards are identical to the version of Berliner Spielkarten. The only difference can be found in the ace of shield, and later the ace of shield as well.

No difference to Berliner Spielkarten.

Beside the company logo of Nürnberger Spielkarten, we also find the manufacturer information: "Nürnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag GmbH"

Size: 89 x 57 mm

Manufacturer information additionally on ace of bell! New, the initial letters of the company logo on the ace of shield are printed in red colour. Year: 2007/08

Size: 89 x 57 mm

VASS Leinfelden

Also Vass can be identified by the ace of acorn.

The court cards by VASS have slightly different faces and also the way they have their hair is noticeable.

Interesting that these cards have no manufacturer information, but ornamentation only.
