Patience

With the word patience there are different associations. On one hand you understand playing cards that have a small size, about half as ordinary playing cards. On the other hand patience is a card game you play with yourself. Beside the classic patience there are further games, such as Solitaire and Free Cell that are variations. Nowadays these games more frequently are played on the personal computer.

The pattern can be any standard game. Very often it is the Anglo-American pattern, but also the Berlin pattern and various regional patterns are manufactured in this small format. In Italy and Spain such cards are produced with the traditional Italian and Spanish suits. I once saw a patience with German suits that was called "Piccolo Skat". Sometimes even non standard cards are published as patience.

Very often patience games have an own pattern. Mostly you cannot tell whether it is a variation to a standard game, the specific pattern of manufacturer or a special patience pattern. The courts cards all seem to represent aristocrats. When the Jack holds a weapon in his hand it is most likely for fencing sport rather than a sword or halberd.

The index is either adjusted to the language of the country, according the Anglo-American pattern or French. Patience originally comes from France.

The following Pictures are just examples. Also here the variation is quite large. There are also various formats. Some are miniature cards and have only the fraction of the normal card size.

English index. All Jacks are aristocrats. The Jack of hearts is a gentleman with a rose in his hand.

German index.

French index. The Jack of spades holds a pistol in his hand, probably for a duel.

These cards resemble various patterns (Berlin, Dutch, but especially the Swedish).
